I rely heavily on Kali Linux for penetration testing and intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS). I deploy it in a controlled virtual environment consisting of Attacker and Defender VMs to test some penetration testing experiments. My research depends mainly on tools such as Nessus, Nmap, SNORT (for intrusion detection), HPing3 among others. I developed Java code on Kali using the Java Secure Socket Extension (JSSE) and OpenSSL for creating secure cryptography channels between a Java clients and servers. Kali supported many tools for packet sniffing and inspection such as Wireshark and TCP Dump. Excellent Linux environment for security and cryptography programming as well as penetration testing and ethical hacking.
